RIFLE SHOOTING

NELSON ASSOCIATION IRVINE SHIELD CLOSE WIN FOR NELSON ft Tho twenty-first annual competition for llio Irvine Shield was fired yesterday at Tapawei-a, this; being the first occasion that it has been fired for in that locality. Eight teams competed ranging from Owen Junction to Nelson City. The dav was gloriously lino with a light. wind from tho right which struck the hillside running parallel to the range and at times threw back in the opposite direction, playing havoc, with some of the marksmen". A marked improvement is noticeable in the up-country clubs' marksmanship. Woodstock and Owen Junction ran tho Nelson A very close indeed, and both clubs have improved greatly and had hard luck in not winning the shield. Tadnior A and Tui have improved beyond expectation and give promise of better things next year. Nelson A won tho Shield by the narrow margin of 5 points from Woodstock. This is tho 17th win for Nelson in 20 competitions, Nelson not competing on ono occasion. PROGRESS SCORES Tho progress of the match was as follows : At 300yds—Nelson A 154.
