FASTER MONDAY’S DOWNPOUR SLIPS AND WASHOUTS Torrential rain at Westport on Monday brought down many slips in tlm gorge and traffic was severely hampered. One bridge approach was washed away, in fho evening the town was awash with water, in Seine places to the extent of' two and three feet.

The heavy rain wrought havoc, in the Duller Gorge. The late cars from Christchurch which should have arrived at Westport as 9.15 p.m., and from the Kiunara races, arrived in Westport at 6.15 a.m. next day.

An approach to a bridge near the 10 mile was washed away and in the blinding rain a service car went down. Cars were, despatched from Westport and after a good deal of trouble the car was pulled back on the road. On the Karamea road from Granitv iho water was almost, waist deep in places. A service bus did not reach Westport until the early hours of Tuesday. For a good part of the distance it was necessary for a. man to walk in front of the car in order to pick the road. 'Telegraph lines were down and there were numerous slips and washouts. The weather at Greyinouth and Knmara was fine on Easter Monday.
