MARKETING OF FRUIT
A COMPLEX HUSINESS
SECURING ADEQUATI'] RETURN'S
TO GROWERS
{37 TeteErapb.-Special to "The Wail")
CHRTSTCHURCH, This .Day. The Marketing of Fruit was the subject of an address given to the Fruitgrowers' Association, by .Mr L. Payiiter, Government orchard instructor. Mr Paynter stated that fruit marketing in the future was going to be a rather complex business. The main object to be attained was security fev the grower of sufficient to compensate him for his time, labour, and money expended. The fruit should be picked in uniform condition, several pickings being necessary, and all the fruit, plioukl he '■ handled carefully to avoid bruising. Grading should be commenced at picking time, and all the fruit unfit for the market Should he allowed to fall to the ground to be gathered up later, and ted to pigs or sent to a by-product factory. The packing was of great importance if the fruit was to be presented to the buyer in an "attractive manner, and clean cases should always be used. All cases should be branded to denote the grade of the fruit it contained, and they should also hear the initials or some distinguishing mark to indicate the grower. It would seem as if some form of control were necessary in order that the markets might receive a steady supply of:friiit. Many of the market's were either over supplied oi- starved, hence the.reason for a great fluctuation in prices. This must be left for the growers to solve. He advised growers to always place a good article on the open market to gain the confidence of the public, and there would always be, an avenue for the sale of second "grade fruit without exposing it to the gaze of all and sundry, and thereby convey the impression that there 'was a big quantity of this class of fruit produced.
