5000 UNEMPLOYED

(To the Editor)

Sir,—The news that has recently come to us from what must be regarded as a reliable source in Auckland is sufficient to make the most dareless pause and reflect. The Rev. Jasper Calder is not an -irresponsible opened-mouthed red hot revivalist nor a republican nor a "Red Fed". In his very fine work in the northern city' he is perfectly constitutional. His methods are marked by sobriety and earnestness and are never exaggerated. 5000 people starving! The position is indeed serious now. He may well ask "What will it be like in a few months time when the winter is upon us." This in a new land. And it would seem that this terrible state of affa'irs has come upon us suddenly. In the past we had nothing approaching such a crisis as this. The most disconcerting fact of all is that the government appears to be either helpless or indifferent. I am etc., CONCERNED. ■ Nelson, 4th February.
