The introduction of a 66 2-3 yards breast stroke handicap and a novelty 1 balloon race will add interest to the carnival. Auckland Lady Champions The star attraction will be the appearance of Misses Magee, and Champion. Miss Magee recently won the 100 yards’ ladies’ championship of Auckland, defeating Miss Stockley, the 100 yards New Zealand ladies’ champion in 67 secs. Miss Champion is the girls’ 220 yards intermediate champion of Auckland and New Zealand. Recently she broke the New Zealand record for this event, covering the distance in 2min 52 3-ssces. It will be well worth seeing these girls in action, and observant swimmers should learn a lot from them. The Need of Training Now that Nelson possesses such fine and well run baths, swimming is hound to become more popular, and with frequent carnivals the standard of swimming should improve considerably. There is swimming talent in Nelson which cam only : be developed by constant, hard training. The swifnmerwho has the talent and is keen to improve in speed and endurance should now he hard at it, swimming distances of 100, 220, or even 440 yards, constantly and always at a fair pace. Blenheim Competitors The Blenheim Club is sending a good team of competitors up for the carnival. Everything points to this meeting being one of the b es t ever held in Nelson. It is the Club’s intention to hold another evening carnival on 21st February, when a first class programme will be' staged. The Baths Going by the number of persons who patronise the baths they are proving a huge success. Nothing but praise is the opinion of all who visit them. “Crawl” received a letter from a keen swimmer in Christchurch last week, and he was saying ho had been in Wellington, and talking to people who were interested in swimming, was told that the Nelson baths were as good as one would see anywhere in New Zealand. The City Council are to he congratulated on the choice of their baths’ caretaker and his wife. They are as keen as anyone to see the baths a success. Their control over the vast number of children who go to the baths is wonderful.
