RUSSIAN OIL'
PURCHASE BY STANDARD OIL COMPANY

The Standard Oil Company states that neither the American nor British Government forbids trade with the, Soviets; that the long distance between the United States and India made the purchase of Russian oil for the Indian market more economical; that subsidiaries of the Royal Dutch and Shell group as late as 1925 purchased considerable Russian oil; that the importation of Russian oil constitutes no menace to the Indian or the Burma oil industry; that price-cut-ting and secret rebates instituted by the Royal Dutch and Shell group in India will cost the Royal Dutch, and Shell group and the Burma companies approximately 2,750,000 dollars here' and the Standard Oil Company of New York approximately, 4,000,000 but the latter will not be swejved from its policy "by such desperate destructive measures as are Being followed in India and are being threatened in other parts of the world." ■ . .' i •

Mr Hoover declared that the Commerce Department does not intend to interfere in the reported dispute between Standard Oil and the Royal Dutch and Shell Companies.
