A CHILD'S DEATH
UNUSUAL CIRCUMSTANCES

WANGANUI, This Day. The infant child of Major Bremner, of the Defence Department, who is under transfer from Hawera to Christchurch, died on the train shortly after being taken off at Waverley yesterdav. On Sunday night the girl, who was 17£ months old, had eaten a portion of a meta burning tablet, and a doctor was 'Called who said there wafs nothing poisonous in the. tablets but that the child would have abdominal pains and to give her oil and milk.
The child cried and vomited during the night and the doctor, who again called in the morning, washed out the child's stomach and said that she would be all right. Travel on ""the train developed convulsions, and she died at a doctor's room at Waverley. The Coroner, Mr Barton, said there had been at least two similar deaths in recent years, involving various kinds of* naphthaline tablets. The children after treatment appeared to get all right, then bcame suddenly ill, and died. He was anxious to see whether or not some remedy could be found. The enquiry was adjourned for a week.
