Dr. J. Henderson, whose appointment as Director of the Geological Survey Department, in succession to the late Mr I*. G. Morgan, was announced on Saturday, is a- New Zealander, and was educated at Dunedin, and obtained his degree as D.Sc. in 1908 and B.Sc. in metallurgical engineering in 1913; he. also holds the certificate of mine and land surveyor. After gaining experience in practical mining at Denniston and Reeiton, he was appointed Director of the Reefton School of Mines in 1904. In 1911 ho joined the staff of the Geological Survey Department as mining geologist, and has now been promoted to the position of director. He has contributed many papers on geological questions to scientific journals.

Bishop Cleary, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, spent his 70th birthday in bed at a private hospital on Sunday. The "New. Zealand Herald* states that although he is making steady progress after his recent operation, he will not be able to resume his duties for some time.
