NELSON'S "FRONT DOOR"

RECLAIMING THE MUDFLAT REPORT TO BE OBTAINED The possibilities of reclaiming the mudnat between Halifax street and Auckland Point was the subject of a short but interesting discussion at the City Council meeting last evening. In introducing the matter, Councillor Neale said he felt there was nothing citizens would more willingly see than the reclamation of. the mudnat. There might be the possibility, but perhaps not the advisability, of selling the leases of the Halifax street frontage and thus denying revenue from the scheme. Councillor N'jale then moved a motion authorising the City Engineer to prepare a report as to the cost, itc, of the proposal. Nothing added the speaker, would make a greater improvement to the city. The Mayor-: I quite agree witli that. In seconding tho motion, Councillor Gibbs said he did not think the Council could touch the matter at present; but it might happen to be a financial proposition from which the, Council could derive revenue. He understood that the Council held the property on the understanding that it was filled in. The Town Clerk: That is so. In supporting the proposition, Councillor Watson remarked that the Returned Soldiers' Association always favoured a road being made from Auckland Point to the tip as a memorial avenue. Had the Poppy Day money been thus expended from the first the road would now have been finished. The objection, however, did not now exist, as the Council bad a quarry close at hand, and there was now a possibility of getting the work done very cheaply. r In the opinion of Councillor Smith, the matter was one of the most pressing needs in Nelson. He had had this in mind when the- Education Board offered the Haveri road school site to the Council. So soon as it was in any way of being undertaken there was no doubt the public would do anything in reason to assist, and it would be for the great benefit of the town. ' ' The Mayor was very pleased Councillor Neale 'had brought the proposrj' forward, and ho Heartily supported it. _ The motion was then put and carried unanimously.,
