RAI VALLEY ITEMS

• The Rai Valley Co-operative Dairy Company last week had the pleasure of meeting Mr Wilson Sears, who has come from England and is 1 touring the factories of the Dominion to explain how the New Zealand cheese is handled and sold in the Old Country. Mr Sears explained the whole process clearly and concisely, and it was a very satisfactory meeting for all from thp, point of view of increased knowledge of how our cheese is sold. The,Rev. E. S. Emmitt, M.C., and Mr Owen Saton, of Wellington, who have been on a visit to Pelorus Sound, came through Rai Valley on New Year's Day and stayed the night with Mr and Mrs A. Maule. After coining by launch to Havelock, they, obtained a lift as far as Pelorus Bridge, after which they, walked to Rai Valley. They left the next dav for the Sound via Opouri Valley, walking over the hill to Duncan's Bay. Mr and Mrs T. Richards, of Auckland, were farewelled by a party of friends at the suspension bridge on New Year's Day. They carried with them as trophies a. 'fine stag's head mounted, on a shield, and several pairs of antlers. Their departure was regretted by all who knew them. '• Master Noel McKinley last week bravely rescued his sister Marjorie from drowning in the Rai, river. The child was on the river-bank near a fairly deep spot, when she slipped and fell in. Her brother, who was fortunately close by, at once went to the rescue, and catching hold of her pulled her in*) safety. His prompt action undoubtedly saved his sister's life, as she could not swim and was out of her depth. A member of one of the earliest families" to settle in the valley, Mrs C. ,S. Leov, celebrates her fiftieth birthday on Sunday next. Her father, Mr Charles Turner, was the first pioneer to settle in the district; and his wife is still living in the valley, being now a great grandmother.
