FALSE INCOME TAX RETURNS
RAID ON SMALL ARMS COMPANY
HEAVY FINES IMPOSED

As the outcome of the raid on the Small Arms Company, in August last, William Bartlett of Abrahams Brothers), Fanny Cohen, Miriam Hvams, Esther Lyons, Louis Hyams, Phillip Hyams and Harry Hyams were fined amounts totalling £IOOO with total costs £2lO. ~1,1 The charges, to which all pleaded guiltv were of making false income tax returns. Defendants, with the exception of Bartlett, are relatives «>f the Abrahams, and the Crown alleged that for some years past they acted as dummies, enabling Abrahams Brothers to pay a rate of income tax 12 to 16 per cent less than the proper tax.
