HAMPDEN STREET SCHOOL

TO-MORROW’S BIG EVENT

Arrangements are complete foe the big fair and gala to be held m the Hampden street- sehoolgroiinds tomorrow afternoon and evening,' amt given fine weather, an enjoyable time is assured everyone present. It is expected there will be a large attendance of the public from all parts of the city ami arrangements have been made accordingly. Gould’s buses will run continuously from the Commercial Hotel corner. At the fair and gala numerous and varied attractions will bo, provided to amuse both young and old. whilst the housewife who goes with tiie intention of augmenting her requirements will have ample opportunity of purchasing useful household needs at reasonable prices from Ihe produce, cake and work stalls. 'I here will also be refreshment, sweets, plants, dolls and jumble stalls. Afternoon tea wilt he available in the main' school building from 3 o’clock. One of the large classrooms will lie arranged in the form of a museum, where a splendid collection of Maori curios—the property of Mr E. V. Knapp —will be on view. There’ will also be open for inspection Miss Shirtliffs collection of Chinese curios and fancy work; and al;-o curios from Fiji and other countries loaned by. Mrs C. Milner. No one visiting tlie fair should miss this fine exhibition, to which a small charge for admission will lie made.

“Sport for Sports” will attract those, experts who like to try their skill at Lhe side shows, of which a number have been provided; while the lucky dips in the bran tubs are always a source of delight to the children. From two o’clock, when the fancy dress parade starts in the schoolgroun.d, right on until 10 at night entertainment is provided for visitors. There should not be a dull moment for anyone. The official opening by Mr 11. Alrnove, M.P., takes place at 2.30 and will he followed by fancy marches in costume by schoolgirls and various humorous sports for children. The 12th Regiment Band will enliven proceedings in the afternoon, having given their services to help the school along. The evening’s entertainment will commence at 7 o’clock with a display by the Hampden Company of Girl Guides under Mrs Milner (captain) and Miss Betts (lieut.). At 7.45 a first class openair concert will commence, the following artists having volunteered their services :—Messrs K. Farmer, D. Bishop, T. Houlker, T. Cole, E. Jackson, G. Price and W. Brundell; (Mesdam.es E. Busli and H. -Grant; Misses Ralph (2) and Colema'n. Miss V. Wilding, L.A.8., will act as accompanist. Following the concert will be gymnastics op the horizontal and parallel bars, and other items by members of the Y.M.C.A. The day’s enjoyment will conclude with items by the orchestra. The grounds will be brilliantly illuminated in the evening by many coloured electric lamps.
