DISTRICT ASSOCIATION * MEETING

IMPORTANT MATWtS

A meeting of the District Cricket Association was held on Wednesday even- .. . jng.... There were present : Messrs W. B. ■ ■ Griffin (president), and W. Max (repl'C- - senting Takaka), R. G. Eden (\yaimea), W R. Eyles (Tapawera), T. A. Searell, J, Newman, E. E. Neale (Nelson). The Motueka. delegate, although in town during the day, had to return home before the meeting in order to attend one at Motueka. Mr E. R. Neale, who attended the recent Cricket Council Conference at Christchurch, mado a report on the proceediogSjWhich have been fairly fully reported. Tli.e delegate emphasised the necessity for the Association to be represented'at any. such future conference and expressed the opinion tliat had a strong stand not been taken by the ' Taranaki and Nelson delegates, some system pi group or tournament matches would’ have been jiftr.oijiiced, which would have effectually prevented Nelson and’ probably many other associations from. - competing, as it would involve travelling- two or three times every season. "It! would ip addition have confin- / ed” Nelson’s matches in the competition forajl time to ; playing Marlborough, Buller and West Coast, the ultimate destination of the cup being then decided upon . the number, of wins'gained by the, leading teanr iti ; each group. After a long di’s'ciissfph at the conference the 'matter was referred to a further conference of minor association, delegates the next kV.:. toothing; and’from.that meeting a sub- - —-’committee, consisting of the Taranaki, Nelson,- Southland, -. Mh.na.watu and Wanganui'delegates’was set up. This committee met again in the; evening and after -exhaustive discussion recotomend,",”:T"iedstthaCithe: system remain as at pre-:^.:H!;-seht;'; but'’ a suggestion was made, ~. ’-emanating from Nelson, that the Council consider reclassifying the minor associations with a view'to establishing a third competition for about six or eight ‘ of the weaker associations bn the same lines, thus bringing the Hawke Cup districts .down to a workable number, with provision for promotion of teams from the lower grade when they prove strong enough.; . •>'“ ; »_ NEWMAN SHIELD . •_>. Tt-;was reported that all associations ' had expressed their willingness to allow the Marlborough district to play as one > team in the Newman Shield competition for this season in order to encourage them > ‘'to-play;'instead of being divided into ) ' Ttyo as formerly. This means s , that- the -holder (one of the Nelson sub- !'• association) will this season have to meet '• the full strength of Marlborough for the i pshieid., - 1 R ; wae -decided that the first Newman Shield game be played on 16th and 17th ; .December and the draw resulted in the i following order of challenges: Motueka, I . Takaka, Marlborough. Tlie first match,* therefore) ' .will be between Nelson (the holders) and Motueka on the above dates. The, dates for the remain- ! ’ der will he decided later. The Waimea J . match will probably bp in January and t in February. ( _ ’^'! 4 ‘ : TOe'.'h'pUrs. of . play for these matches of summer time will ho from 10.30 to 7 ip order to endeavour jdoWh the time required as much as possible.' ■ " ’ ■■ ‘ KIRKPATRICK CUP 4-** -i V - r l ' -if. -• * tS ji 3 I^e 'junior tor'tlie Kirlcpatrick (top, held by Wpimea, has'BeeVi challenged for by Nelson, Motueka-and Tapawera, and tfip draw here again gave •' .the first'match to Motueka and will be played at Wakefield on. 17th December. Nelson has the second match apd Tapawera the third. A cpnsiderable'numbcr V Tapawwa players were reclassified as juniors in order to enable that associa- _ tion to take payt. In accordance with the resolution adopted by th.e Hew Zealand Cricket Council conference, the 6-ball over will be reverted to in all matches) and associations are requested to act accordingly, including club games. REPRESENTATIVE' MATCHES letter v/as received from West Copst asking for a gajne at Greymouth this season, -and. the 'matter was deferred until the’matter ’of travelling to if successful there, to the N.ofth is'settled; but it was recognised jhat a visit, ty> tHe Coast was very mhch; : pverdue and every, effort will be mgdpi lo seml arlteanj. Neale' reported’ having discussed at Gj?yjstphurcK with Mr Beale, of AuckJahA/^.thd' "question of his touring team ;u .vjsitmg . Nplspn again, and Mr Beale *.<> bring the team again either this year or next, but it is. pronZTr 'fcpfyp that! he will go to Taranaki this ..year.; ■ The Wellington representative D: McKenzie) 'also informed the *v- delegate That the Wellington As'^S&ciation intended to send a strong team -each year to two of the minor associa'Xi'tion districts attached to t’|e Wellington Shield district, arid that NelMarlborough would be visited ..season by a strong team. Maflborough Association having declined to accede to Nelson’s request to play the Hawke Cup preliminary match at' Nelsop, it was decided rather than refer the matter to the N.Z.C.C. to fall in with Marlborough's request to play at Blenheim, commencing on Thursday of next week. Nelson'must win this match in order to. he able to lodge a challenge against the holders, and these elimjnating games must be played before iSth December. Marlborough last season defeated a fair-ly-strong Nelson team at Blenheim and as some difficulty may be experienced in getting the best team away the Nelson teapij will require to make every effort to qualify. The team will leave Nelson on Wednesday evening, and it is expected that the'match will he completed in two days, so as to take up the minimum of time and with this object in view the Nelson Association has requested that the hours of play be 10.30 to 6.30. This makes a very long day, but the time must he curtailed if possible, Among the : delegates at the Christchurch conference were A. C. Cooke, of Gjsborne, who was the first secretary of the Nelson Old Boys’ Cricket Club, in 1908;- F. Hawke, who captained the Waikato team at Nelson in the first Hawke Cup challenge match in 1922; and «f. H. Hayhow, of Wanganui, who has visited Nelson with that team two or three times in Hawke Cup matches. In addition to Mr Beale, of Auckland, all these delegates spoke of the wonderful times ihey had spent in Nelson and expressed the hope that they would he able to bring other teams here again in the near future.
