WELLINGTON, 30th Nov. The House of Representatives met at 2.30 p.m. Mr W. IT. Field (Otakij gave notice to ask tlie Minister of Education whether, in view of the fact that the Education Amendment Bill, containing a clause dealing with the Nelson system was being dropped, 1m would cause legislation on the subject of the Nelson system to he introduced next year. Mr J. A. Lee (Auckland East) gave notice to ask the Postmaster-General if he would arrange for captains of intercolonial and foreign steamers to report their position by wireless once or twice during the- voyage, in order that (he reports might he posted at the various post, offices. _ Replying to Mr V. 11. Potter (Roskill), the Minister of Education stated that he would bring tlie question* of medical examinations under the notice of the University Senate in order that they might consider the matter in February next. , Mr P. Fraser (Wellington Central) stated that at tlie November University examinations some of the supervisors were superannuated Public servants, whereas somo qualified persons dependent on intermittent employment and constantly engaged in that work in past years had been turned down. He asked whether, steps would he taken at the matriculation examination to see that qualified persons with no regular incoiqes should he given preference. The Hon. R. A. Wright (Minister of Education) replied that he would draw the University authorities’ attention to the matter and ask them to see what could be done towards meeting Mr Fraser’s request. The Unemployed Workers’ Bill (Mr P. Fraser) was introduced and read a first time. Mr Fraser said he introduced the Bill in order to impress on the Government the necessity for some organised scheme to nieet with the unemployment difficulty. Tlie Minister of Labour had stated last night that there were 1600, unemployed on the hooks of the Depai’triient, but he ventured to say that the figure only represented onetlri.rd of the total. He trusted nextsession there would be Government legislation to meet the unemployment difficulty.
