UNEMPLOYMENT

POSITION STILL SERIOUS IN CHRISTCHUBCH (By. Teleeraph—Special to "The Mail") CHRISTCHURCH, 29th Nov. Although interest in/'the unemployment situation seems to have died down, everybody Believing that relief comes naturally with the summer, the position in the; "city is still very bad. The Government Labour Bureau has 225 men on its books, ..certainly a reduction, but still sufficiently serious to warrant attention. Though the number of unemployed has now been substantially reduced, in opinion of Trades Hall secretaries, who are in touch with the existing conditions, the position is still very bad. "I have no hesitation in saying," said Mr H. Worrall, secretary-general rvf the Labourers' Union," that the position among labourers is still very bad and there is every indication that it will be so until the freezing works open again- Work in the building trade is particularly slack. Several times during the la.st few weeks when I have wanted only one or two labourers I have been literally besieged with unemployed, some of whom claim to be in very straitened circumstances.' .■' Mr W. Green, general secretary of the Trades and Labour Council, backed up Mr WorraH's statement. He thought that there might be some relief when shearing was in full swing, but the building trade was very slack and many carpenters were out of work.
