CHRISTOHURCH WOOL SALES „ (United Presß Association) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. ■ The first wool sale of the senson in the South Island opened here this morning with a full bench of buyers. There was an atmosphere of caution at the start of the' sale and in some respects prices were not uj> to the standard expected. This was particularly the case for the average class of halfbred wool. Fine crossbred met with a very keen sale and fully maintained rates for similar wool at North Island sales. There wns a good demand for all fellmongery lots and super wool of all classes was, very keenly competed for. It is suggested that uncertainty regarding the shipping •'tnation in Australia may have had some influence on tho caution exercised. All buying' points were represented, the Continent being more prominent in the early stages, but later local mills anil Bradford secured their shares. LONDON WOOL SALES ;, Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report having received 'the following cablegram from their London house, under date of the 28th instant—No wool sales liavo been held to-day owing to thick fog. ERRORS IN ENGLISH ~*tJ"" Manv of our words owe their present form simply to the ignorance and errors of our forefathers. A butler,' for instance, is really a bottler; a walrus a whale horse; and a belfry, which originally had nothing to do witli n bell, is, correctlv, a berfry on a watch tower A butcher was. a bocher or killer of goats. , An intrusive "d" turned the asphodel into the, daffodil, while a dropped '•]" gave ns our word azure, which should bo lastarc. In times of scarcity «, man who hoardeel ' corn was a corn inudgin, and later the word was corrupted to curmudgeon, and wns applied to an. ill-natured, miserly person; while the word cheat is a corruption' of escheat, a legal term meaning to confiscate.
