The sitting of the Supreme Court commenced this morning before Mr Justice Ostler, who congratulated the district on its comparative absence of crime. Five cases would. he presented to the grand jury, none of them of a most serious nature. In four the grand jury would have no difficulty in finding true bills. In the other case, there were peculiar circumstances. A man was charged Avith the theft of furniture and jewel--lery which his' wife claimed was hers,' The law laid down that a husband or wife could not be guilty of the theft of each other’s property while living together.- The grand jury had to ho satisfied there Avas sufficient evidence that the parties were living apart before they sent the case to trial. No hill Avas-returned in the case of Andrew McEwan for alleged theft of property, special reference to Avhich case Avas made by his Honour. PROCEEDINGS AT NAPIER NAPIER, Bth Nov. Dir Justice MacGregor complimented the district on the absence of serious crime. Addressing the grand jury on .a case arising out of a fatal motor accident, he said motorists had to observe the rule of the road, refrain from- 1 speeding, and keep a good look out.
