NEW ZEALANDERS WIN CUP,

HIGH STANDARD OF PLAY

SYDNEY, 9th June.

The final match between New Zealand and Victoria was played at Rose Bay in perfect weather, New Zealand winning by four matches to two. All games were well contested and the standard of golf was very high. A feature of the day was the victory of Duncan and Horton against Wliitton and Russell. The Victorians won the iirst, hole but New Zealand won the next twohy dint of two nice putts by Horton. The fifth and sixth were halves but Duncan sank a great putt on the seventh for a win. The eight was halved but a weak second by Duncan allowed the Victorians to reduce the lead at the ninth. Weak putting by their opponents gave (he New Zealanders the tenth. The eleventh, twelfth,; thirteenth and fourteenth, were'.halved, Wliitton’and Eusj. sell" won' the fifteenth hut lost the sixteenth. The seventeenth was halved but New Zealand won the eighteenth, finTshi'n'g' fdur "UpV Quin and Ross also - , lost the first and won the secbnd. They lost the third and fifth but squared the game at the seventh, and took the lead at the ninth, Quin sinking a great putt. Quin again sank a great putt at the eleventh and put New Zealand two up. The twelfth was halved, but weak putting by the Victorians allowed the New Zealanders to increase their lead. The remaining five holes were halved.

Jn pair golf Duncan won the first againsl Whitton, and after the next two had been halved, Whitton squared the match at the fourth. Duncan then won the fifth, seventh and eighth and turned for home three up. Duncan became five up by winning the eleventh and twelfth, but Whitton then won the next thre’e holes. Duncan halved the next two, hut lost the last, finishing one up. Horton, playing Russell, found the bunker with his drive at the first and lost the hole. He mulled his iron at the second and seemed to lose confidence for a while, and was three down at the turn. However, he played well coming home and was only one down at the eighteenth. Ross and Ileadlam had a great struggle. Headlaru was two up at the fifth, but Ross then won the sixth, seventh and eighth, only to lose the ninth. Headlam was one up at the twelfth, but Ross squared again at the fourteenth. Each was square at the eighteenth, hut the Victorian prevailed at the twentieth. The Quin—Schlapp match was productive ot the finest golf. The Victorian won the first, but Quin became one up by winning the fifth and sixth. Schlapp, seventh. The eighth and ninth .were halved. Quin won the tenth but lost the twelfth and fourteenth. He then made one of his characteristic finishes winning the fifteenth and sixteenth and halving the last two. holes to win and give New Zealand the Kirk-Windeyer Cup. Results: — Foursomes: Duncan and Horton defeated Whitton and Russell four up; Quin and Ross defeated Headlam and Schlapp three up.
