CO-OPERATIVE CONGRESS
AFFILIATION WITH LABOUR PARTY (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Australian & N.Z. Cable Association) LONDON, 7th June. The Co-operative Congress at Cheltenham, by 1960 votes to 1834 votes, approved of affiliation with the Labour .Party. Opposition 'to affiliation was based on the belief that politics would introduce strife and bitterness into the co-opera-tive movement. Advocates of affiliation emphasised that agreement between the respective executives was reached on the initiative of co-operators. Labour and co-operators alike aimed at common ownership, while Tories and Liberals aimed at private ownership and exploitation of land, capital, transport, and banking.
