BRIGHTER BUSINESS AHEAD
CHPJSTCHURCH OPINION (By Telegraph—Special to "The Mail") ■'.- CHMSTCHURCH, Bth June. Opinion in Christchurch supports the report made to the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce by the economic committee, which maintained that brighter business days are ahead of the Dominion. In the wholesale, hardware trade there had been an improvement within the last two weeks. Whether this is • permanent or the result of realisation on crops or again the reaction from the deeper depression the trade has passed through is not clear at the moment. It is.possible that trade will not pick up appreciably until April of next year. The hardware business has not yet commenced to feel the pinch of the bank rate. These engaged in it, howevjr, look forward to the builders "buttoning up" this winter. The market for the best cottage properties ;s not to their liking, and they cannot pass on to purchasers the results of the bank rate increases which reach them through the accommodation afforded to them by the merchants
A leader of the soft goods trade said in that branch of business the depression had not yet slackened, nor is the financ.al position any easier. The real estate market as a whole, however, is indicative of changing times. People who have been hanging back expecting the market to fall further show an inclination to purchase, and those who buillt during the hoom seem moro content to cut their lossas, realising that building materials are now cheaper and a steadier level of prices has been arrived at.
