NEW ZEALAND BUTTER FOR AUSTRALIA
AGITATION FOR PROHIBITIVE
DUTY
HON. A. D. McLEOD'S VIEWS
(United Press Association)
WELLINGTON, This Day,
The Hon. A. D. McLeod, Minister of j Lands, who represented the New Zea-1 land Government at the inauguration of' the Federal capital at Canberra, returned by the Marama to-day. The greater part of his time was occupied in obtaining first-hand information relative to the progress made by basic, and manufacturing industries. He thinks it doubtful whether the beet sugar industry could ho established successfully in New Zealand, fie enquired carefully into the agitation on the part of Australian dairy farmers for a duty of sixpence per pound on New Zealand butter, and concluded that if not the whole, at least some further, protection will be granted ; but he doubts the wisdom of a policy which would prevent New Zealand dairy farmers finding an occasional market for their products in the Commonwealth. He suggested that before action was definitely taken by the Australian Commonwealth, the Minister of Customs should visit the Dominion and discuss matters.
