ECONOMIC CONFERENCE
WORK OF LABOUR OFFICE DISCUSSED
(By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Australian & N.Z. Cable Association)
GENEVA, 6th June
The last few days of the Conference were devoted to consideration of the directors’ report on last year’s work of the Labour Office. The South African Government delegate denounced the attitude of the Labour Office in pushing for the adoption of measures regardless of the subsequent cost to members. He cited the instance of 1925 when the Labour Office requested the collection of statistics as to cost of-sickness insurance in various countries for the information of the present conference. Though the directors’ new report contains a passage expresisng the opinion that no good purpose is to be served by the collection of such statistics, this appears just when the conference is asked to adopt a convention on the subject. There is growing feeling that the adoption of tiie Labour Convention will ultimately entail intolerable burdens.
