NORTHERN SITUATION TENSE

The second battalion of the Border Regiment embarked for north China and a Middlesex battalion is shortly proceeding there. The northern situation is tense. There is a slight rupture amongst the northerners, one faction favouring withdrawal from Pekin and preserving the army intact and the other insisting on the status quo and compromising with the Cantonese. A Manchurian coup d’etat is reported to be developing, having the support of the younger element. JAPAN’SATTITUDE ' statement by rremier „ ' ' '■ I ,f. The Premier concluded: “Contrary to the apprehension that Japan was seeking territorial expansion for her surplus population, Japan is, above all, seeking markets for products and harmony with all foreign peoples.”
