WINTER BOWLS

On Friday last (King’s Birthday) a tournament was held on the Wakefield green, and it would be safe to state that no other club in the South Island was playing. Both last .winter and this it has been shown that the game can be played through the winter, which speaks well for the Nelson climate. Practically every day the Wakefield green is used and Nelson players as well as some from Richmond have gone up every Saturday and sometimes on Wednesdays. The tournament started at 10 o’clock' and four games of one and a-quarter hours wore played. Eleven rinks entered, skipped by Ricketts, Tunnicliff, Lewis (Wakefield), Dee, Vitetla, Wilkinson (N.elson), Piper, Whiting, Tvo Tunnicliffc (Maitai), Norris, Newport (Richmond). At the close of play about 3.30, only two rinks bad gone through without a loss, viz.. Boon, Papps, Ching, Ricketts (Wakefield), and Dodson, Gray, Skjellerup, Whiting (Maitai). These played a five-bead game to find the winner and the Wakefield rink came out successful, winning 4-1. At 12 o’clock the whole of the play ers sat down to a splendid lunch served by about ten Wakefield ladies, and before dispersing afternoon tea was provided and the universal opinion was, “We have had a great day.” After lunch the new president, Mr W. E. Poole, welcomed the visiting bowlers and thanked them for the support giyen to a winter tournament. In passing he mentioned how sorry the club was to hear of the indisposition of Mr R. W. Stiles, who had always been a keen supporter of the Wakefield Club. He was pleased to hear tTiat Mr Stiles would soon be resuming his duties. At the close of play, Mr Piper, president of the Centre, thanked the Wakefield Club for giving bowlers an opportunity to partake in a mid-winter tournament. and called for three cheers for them and another for the ladies in giving up a whole day to assist in the entertainment of the players.

WAKEFIELD CLUB The annual meeting of the Wakefield Bowling Club was bold at the Library. Mr W. E. Poole was voted to the chair in the unavoidable absence of the president. The balance sheet, showing a nice surplus over expenses, was adopted. The membership of (he Club is only just over twenty, yet the Club has a full sized green and a lias shown bow it is possible to keep going on so small a revenue — thanks greatly to the great amount of help freely given by members. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr W. E. Poole: vice-presidents, Messrs N. Bullard and D. Burgess; secretary arid treasurer, Mr 11. Ricketts. Mr Poole, in thanking the Club for electing him to the highest office, trust'll that- the members would yo-operate and make the coming season a gre';, success. Hearty votes of thanks were passed to Mr Kingsland, retiring president, and the lion, secretary for the great amount of work done for the Club; also to the ladies who were always to the fore when wanted.
