OBITUARY

SIR JOHN ROSS

The death has occurred of Sir John Ross,, aged 92;'-founder of the' firm" of Ross and Glendining. He was born at Caithness, Scotland, and came to New Zealand in 1861. His benefactions during his lifetime included £20,000 to. the Presbyterian Church Knox College and £SOOO to. Ross Home, which was named after him.

MR JOSEPH T. WARD, F.R.A.S

WATROA, This Day.

The death has occurred of Mr J. T. Ward, F.R.A.S., Wanganui. Deceased went into the county hospital and was operated on for appendicitis, ' but peritonitis set in a few days later and he passed away last night. He Was Director of the Wanganui Observatory, where he had resided for thirty years. He leaves a grnwn-up family of four sons and three daughters.

Mr Ward delivered the annual Cawthorn Lecture last September, dealing with the wonders of the universe. Deceased was the contributor of the monthly notes on the heavens which have appeared in the "Mail" for many' years. Mr Ward's relatives were amongst the. early arrivals in the Nelson settlement, Mr Joseph Ward having come'ln the Fifeshire in 1842,. Mrs.'Clifton,' of Richmond, is a sister of deceased.
