POLICE RAID AT AUCKLAND (Uulted Pram) , ; | | AUCKLAND, 3rd Jam i As tho sequel to*> a notice raid on »Sat-j urday morning, OlifUiti fSallaiy, aged 37, arid Henry t.'f.iundrtrs, aged 27, were charged at tho Police Court with keeping common gaming houses—Sailary in the Gladstone Buildings and Saunders al (he Elite Tailoring Company’s premises, Customs Street. Laurence Chapman, aged 23, was charged with assisting Sallarv, and Alfred Martin Mali hews and George P ralt, aged 50, and Harry Young, aged 27, with being found in a common gaming house. Sail ary, Saunders and Chapman pleaded guilty. Detective Cummings stated that Sallary had been carrying on a wholesale business in tote odds and had been convicted on 6th February last. Saunders also carried on a big business. Sallary was president of d lie Bookmakers’ Association for Auckland province and Young was secretary.
Mr Hunt, S.M., fined Sallary and Saunders 1175 each. Chapman arid Young £25 each, Matthews and Pratt. £2 each.
