RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS
PROVISIONAL REGULATIONS . APPROVED BY CABINET Regulations governing National Research scholarships have been approved by Cabinet, and will, it is anticipated, be gazetted at an early date. The regulations adopted by the council make provision for the annual award of four national research scholarships to graduates of the New Zealand University or other qualified persons to enable them to carry on research in any branch of science or economics. A due proportion of the scholarships will be offered for the purpose of encouraging research in connection . with matters relating to the industries of the Dominion. Each scholarship Will be of the value of £IBO per annum, and a grant not exceeding a total of £25 will be made to defray the cost of special apparatus or upeeial books required for the research, and the cost of transit/while the scholar is engaged on the work. The apparatus and hooks, however, will remain the property of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. The schol-
arship is tenrtble for one year—at a university college or other institution approved by tlie Research Council —but the tenure may be extended to a second year in special circumstances approved by the Minister. Each scholar will be required to devote his whole time during the tenure of the scholarship to work connected with the research unless, under special circumstances, the consent,of the Research Council has been previously obtained. At the end of every three months the student will be obliged to furnish.a report of his work, accompanied by a certificate from the professor or director of the university .department or institution concerned that the work has been done to his satisfaction. No publication of the results of the research is to be made by the scholar unless the consent of the Research .Council is obtained; and the final instalment of the scholarship will not be payable until the detailed report of the results has been made in a form suitable for publication. Applications for the scholarship have to be made on the prescribed form, and submitted to the secretary of Scientific nm\ Industrial Research not later than 14th February in each year.
