LES MURRAY IN AMERICA

CONTEST WITH SOLLY SEEMAN

By his defeat of Solly Socman, Les. Murray, the New Zealand lightweight boxer, immediately made good m America. Judging by.newspaper clippings to hand, he was'given a, great ovation when declared the. whyier. Murray, himself, in a letter to Tom Harris dated 26th November, writes: —

"I managed to work off a bit of a shock last Friday when 1 met and de-i feated Solly Seeman. a Harleih lightweight, who has fought two close fights with Mandeil, the champion. One of these resulted in a points win for Mandell and the other was a no-decision contest, in which Seeman got the newspaper verdict. Ho is rated as one of the four best in the world. The fight was a good one, and, though I. can box a little better than 1 did that night, I think 1 (.showed up pretty well. Some of the papers said that the contest was the best [of the season, and. as several of the world's championships have been fought lecently, that is saving something. : "I won the first round well, and outboxed him. until lialf-wav through the •■second, when one of his rights cauglit my chin. It was one of the best punches I have ever taken, and it made me think }i "bit. I ducked a few heavy punches that ho threw, and then I started in again. After a couple of hard rounds he baught me again, and it took me all 1 knew to keep out of trouble.- However, in the sixth I Was well into my stride, and from then on never looked like losing. I had him nearly out, several timee, and he clung like a leech, and the crowd hooted him for this and for fouling. -

, "At the finish a great hearing, isnd. almost immernatelv the Gardens (Madison, Square) signed me.up* for another match, to come off next month."
