“THE MAIL”—IB66-1926

THE “NELSON EVENING-MAIL” was founded in ] 866 by the late Mr Robert Lucas, who was assisted by the late Mr Robert Stepney Lucas, his eldest son. Mr Lucas was well equipped by training and experience for lhe task and he laid the foundations well. , Mr Lucas died in. 1876 and the business was carried on until the early ’eighties by Mr R. S. Lucas when he was joined by Messrs A. P. and A. A. Lucas, younger sons of Mr Robert Lucas. A few years later Mr R. S. Lucas retired from business and for forty years “The Mail” has been under the direction of Messrs A. P. and A. A. Lucas. Thus, they have been in control for two-thirds of the sixty years of the paper’s existence. Great development has taken place during that time and a very wide measure of public, support and confidence has been accorded. In 1920 “The Colonist” was incorporated in “The Mail.’’ This year the business was formed into a limited liability company with the former proprietors and Mr K. G. Lucas, son of Mr A. A. Lucas, and editor for the previous fourteen years, as directors. Mr A. A. Lucas is chairman of directors. Three generations have thus been associated with the control of “The Mail." Mr F. J. Earle, who joined the company on its formation, was appointed managing-editor.
