The business at. the Magistrate's Court to-day was taken by Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M.

Judgment \by default was given in the following undefended civil cases: J. W. McEwan v. J. Moy, £29 13s, costs £4 14s 6d; Commissioner of Lands v. A. McDonald, £25 10s lOd, costs £4 Is Gd; L. N. Montgomery v. A., H. Inwoed, £l2, costs £2 14s; Richards and Peart v P. J. O'Donoghue, £B, costs £1 14s Gd ; H. O. Washbomn v. C. Franklyn, £3 19s Gd, costs £1 3s 6d; Pitt and Moore v. A. Campbell, £l, costs Bs. DEFENCE PROSECUTIONS F. Fowler and F. Perry were ordered to pay 7s costs .for failing to return certain equipment' to the Defence Department'. It was stated that since the issue of the summons the equipment had been returned, UNREGISTERED RIFLE For failing to register a rifle within se'ven days of obtaining possession of it, M. E. R. White, of Glenhope, was fined 10s, costs £1 7s. The police stated the offence was only a technical one ILLEGALLY. ON LICENSED PREMISES L.'M. Jamieson, who did not appear to answer a charge of being found on licensed premises after hours, was fined.£2, costs 7s. LUGGAGE ON FOOTBOARDS ' A; E.; Agent"was charged on the in- 1 formation of the traffic inspector for the VVaimea County (H. Coltman), with driving a motor car on which the luggage on the footboards projected more than the regulation distance. A plea of guilty was entered. Defendant was fined £l, costs 17s. Mr Kemnitz appeared for the inspector and'Mr Cheek for defendant. • . - ARREARS OF .MAINTENANCE An application was made by -Win. Taylor for an order remitting arrears,of maintenance in regard to, a child under the care of the Education Department.,; The. order was made, the Magistrate issuing a warning that .unless payments were kept up. by the applicant when he obtained employment, an order for imprisonment would be made. SPEEDING MOTORISTS Harold Williams (carrier) pleaded guilty to driving a motor lorry on the Wakapuaka road at a speed dangerous to the public. Mr Kemnitz, for the traffic inspector (H. Coltman) said that defendant drove across the bridge at Oldham's Creek at a speed of 25 miles an hour. Defendant explained that a car was approaching, and as it looked as if they would both meet on-the bridge, he accelerated.

A fine of £1 was imposed, costs 17s Gd. H. Wolfustan and A. Driscoll were charged with driving motor bicycles along the. Stoke road at a speed dangerous to the public. The first-named defendant pleaded guilty, but Driscoll did not appear. Mr Kemnitz. for the inspector, said defendants had crossed at Saxton's corner at a speed of 45 miles and hour, and the Turf Hotel corner at 40 miles an hour.

Each defendant was fined £3, costs £1 Bs.
