Whiie < Die unemployed problem has been acute in Christchurch, the Hospital Board has received many applications for relief. The practice followed in cases where (lie applicants were ablebodied was to require the men to do a day’s work m the grounds in return for the ten shillings worth of food given them. At a recent meeting'of the unemployed, exception was taken to this action by the hospital management. It was argued that Die men should not he required tn do work in return for relief, aryl {liaf, if called upon to work, diev should receive wages at award rates or relief equivalent to 14s, instead of 10s. A deputation from the unemployed waited on the hoard to-day lo urge this claim.

The chairman, Mr Otley, said that the hoard did not employ the applicants for relief, but simply asked them to work when they had nothing else (o do. Lite suggestions of the deputation were referred by Ihe hoard to the Benevolent Gommitlee.
