NAVAL WARFARE
GREAT CHANGES FORESHADOWED AUTOMATIC CONTROL (By Eleotrio Telegraph.—Copyright.) ("Sun" Cable.) (Rec. 12th Oct., 9.5 a.m.) LONDON. Oct. 11. The "Gazette" states that the Atlantic fleet manoeuvres foreshadow the day when gun turrets will operate automatically, eliminating gunners. Every lighting arm of a battleship will be directed by electric controls from aloft.. Already a turrel has been thus operated and controlled. A torpedo which would chase a, moving target is not impracticable. Remarkable experiments have been made with the wireless control of aeroplanes without, pilots. A pilot boarded a. plane at. Portsmouth and was told to do nothing except when ordered by wireless, or to operate normally if wireless control failed. He did' not touch the control until he was ordered to descend, when he was amazed to find himself in Fifeshire
