BILL TO ENABLE PEERESSES TO SIT • ■..,-, AGAIN,DEFEATED (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, June 24. In the House of Lords Lord Astoi moved the second reading of the Bill to enable peeresses in'their own rights to sit and vote in the House of Lords. The same Bill was rejected last year by 80 to 78. Lord Astor said it would entitle twenty-two ladies to take se.iis. Lord Bambury moved tho rejection. He said: "Let these ladies go before the electors and enter the House of Commons if they want to legislate." Lord Cecil said he could not see how the Bill would affect reform of the House of Lords, which he hoped would not,, be long delayed. No new argument had been adduced to justify the Hou~,e departing from its previous decision. The second reading was negatived by 125 to 80.
