MORNING ADJOURNMENT

BY WATMEA COUNTY COUNCIL • CR. BERRYMAN OBJECTS Several of the members of the Waimea County Council come long distances to attend the monthly meetings; and necessitating an early start from their homes; it hag been the custom for many years to adjourn at. 11 a.m. for a few minutes to obtain light refreshment at their own expense and Or. Berryman has never associated himself with these little "birthday, parties"—which never take more than 10 minutes —and at yesterday's meeting he moved:—"That in future there he no adjournment of the regular meetings of the Council (except on County business) between 9.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m." In moving his motion Cr. ■ Berryman said they should do all they could to conserve the time of the Council. Seconded by Or. Jones, who considered it waste of time to adjourn for half an hour. Cr Wilkinson: Only ten minutes. Cr. dones: How long is it them? The chairman: Ten minutes.

Cr. Berryman said it was never less than a quarter of an hour. Cr. Wilkinson said he had never known the adjournment, to take more than 10 minutes. It took longer to have morning tea that day—which .they all enjoyed—than the usual adjournment Cr. Hewetson opposed the motion on principle. He could not understand Cr. Berryman, who not long ago moved that the Council adjourn for morning tea, which would take just as much time as the usual ten minutes; and now he came along with a notice of motion to prohibit it. altogether.

Cr. Berryman: No. You can have it here if you want to.

Cr. Hewetson replied that he did not want the table made dirty with tea and crumbs. He added that so far as he was personally concerned he did not care whether the Council adjourned or not; but some members had their breakfast at 5 o'clock on the morning of the meeting and had to travel a long way to get to town. Out. of consideration for them he would vote against the motion. Cr. Berryman: I have never "heard of a Council meeting adjourning for a "spot" in my life before. Cr. Corder: I don't know what you mean by a "spot." Cr. Hewetson: It is very nice to have a cup of beef tea in winter and a glass of lemonade in the hot weather. In answer to Cr. Hagen, Cr. Hewetson said he would be in favour of adjourning for ten minutes. The motion was put and lost, only the mover and seconder supporting.
