ADVANCEMENT OF HORTICULTURE

SERIES OF LECTURES SUGGESTED

REQUEST TO LOCAL SOCIETY A meeting .of the executive of the Nelson District Council of the Institute of Horticulture was held last evening, there, being present Mr 0. A. Harkness (president), Professor Easterfield, Messrs P. Bolton, \V. H. Simpson, and E. Coleman (secretary).

A communication was received from Mr Cl. A. Green, Dominion Secretary, enclosing a list of subjects considered suitable for a syllabus, and suggesting a" course of studies.

This was considered at length, the conclusion arrived at being that in the circumstances prevailing in Nelson a regular course of studies would be difficult to arrange. At the same time it was felt that much could be done to advance horticulture by a series of talks or papers on special subjects. A motion was eventually carried to (he effect that the Nelson Horticultural Society be written to> and asked to arrange a series of leclurettes on horticultural subjects, such as garden shrubs, rose culture, narcissus culture, vegetable culture, native trees, hybridisation, etc.

Il was thought that from its large membership the Horticultural Society could secure specialists on the various subjects mentioned, who- could provide, a series of interesting and instructive evenings.
