The Mayor stated that he had just returned from a visit .South, and from what he had seen in other places he was not, sure whether lie was in favour of such an appointment. He found just, as much slackness-—if not more—iri other places. Crs. considered this was no reason wiiy a managing overseer should not be appointed in Nelson. After going through the schedule of duties and slightly .'unending some, the three applicants were called before the Council, and eventually it was decided to appoint Mr J. J. Dunn, of Wellington.

He was for three years with the Hastings Borough Council, two years foreman and inspector of works for the Levin Borough Council : overseer at the Mangahao hydro-electric works: and is at present in business in Wellington as a contractor. According to his testimonials lie has a thorough knowledge of all work of paving and road construction. asphalt and concrete work, sewerage ami high pressure water work and overhead construction for trams and lighting, and has had charge of large gangs of men.
