ECLIPSE OF THE SUN

ON TUESDAY MORNING The beginning of the eclipse, which occurs oil Tuesday morning, the 21st, takes place before the Sun rises, for ail piaces except near the East Cape. In other parts of New Zealand the Sun will be party covered by the Moon when it rises.

There will be a large portion, of the Sun covered by the Moon at central, or greatest phase, which occurs at 12 minutes past 8. Ihe eclipse ends at 9.43.

1 Ins is what is known as an annular eclipse, viz... the Sun. instead of being quite covered by the interposing Moon, shows a fine border of light around it. This being due to the fact that- the Moon is farthest, nearly, from the Earth at- the time, and therefore, appears smaller, and just fails to cover the Sun's image. At a position some 50 miles, nearly, to the north of Cape Maria Van Dienu n. this encircling rim of light would be evenly disposed about the dark circumference of the Moon; but at the northernmost- point of New Zealand it will be a little to one side, and this eccentricity wiil increase as we go south. Dr Adams, Government Astronomer, has gone to Cape Reinga where, conditions being favourable, several observations of value may bo made, as this is just within the path of the annular phase. The Hon. Director, Wanganui Observatory.
