XF,M'S AND NOTTS We are now well past the shortest day and the days seem to be drawing out a little. So far we have had a very good winter—the early part, was dry,' while just- lately we have had a good deal of rain. Work on the, farms seems to Tie well forward. Quite a- number of paddocks of oats are to be seen, which will come very welcome for feeding off in the early spring. Just, at present farmers are feeding off their turnips, of which there arc several good crops to be seen in the neighbourhood. A lantern lecture of unusual interest to farmers was given in the N.gatimoti Hall on Wednesday last- by Prof. Easterfielil and Mr liigg. of the Cawthron Institute. It is a. long time since so many people have been seen at a public meeting in Ngatimoti. Prof, linsterfieltl took the first- half of the programme anil gave a very interesting account of the general activities of the Institute, showing a great number of very interesting slides of tlie work which is being cartied out by the Professor and bis staff. The second part of the programme was filled by .Mr Rigg, who gave an accountof bis experiments on top dressing and manuring, and lie showed a number of slides showing the different results obtained with different manures. Of special interest to farmers was the table showing the results of his analysis of the different soil samples which Prof. Enstrrfield and Mr Rigg took from this district some months ago. Mr Chas. Beatson thanked the lecturers on behalf of the audience for all the trouble they had gone to in providing such an interesting and instructive evening. We have been kept quite busy from a social point of view this season. Most of the local clubs have given dances, which have all been well attended. The Ping Pong Club is going strong again this year. Last Saturday a team from Motueka. organised bv Mr Glover, came up and played the Orinoco Club, anil after a good game went home tire victors. it is hoped to arrange a return match in the ear future ;
