COUNTY COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Council ,vas held in the County Chambers on .•aturday, July 4, commencing at 10 aim. Present: The Chairman (A. H. Fletcher). Crs. 1.. Flowers, C. L. Grant, T. Watson, J. Richards, f. F. Lammas, and D. Davis. The following statement of accounts was received : County Fund Overdraft, Dr., £1207.2 7; "Wharf Loan Interest Account Cr., £64/8/7, Aorore Bridge Loan Interest Account £3B/10/8, Gibbstown Water Supply Interest Account £59,15/7, Mangarakau Bridge Loan Interest Account £31,11/-, Paturau Road Loan Interest -Account £9/5/7, Bridges and Culvert '■> Loons Interest Account £238/9/11, Bridges and Culverts Loan Interest Account £2517 3 6, Paturau Road Loan Account £296/0/7, Wharf Account £236/4/7. Accounts totalling £384/17 3, General Account £394/16/6, Bridges and Culverts Loan Account, and £IOO on Paturau Road Loan Account were passed for payment. Correspondence: Chairman, Main Highways Board, circular letter re road economics. Under Secretary. Minister of Health, acknowledging letter re administration of hospitals, and forwarding copy of , letter sent to the Keivitea County Council.

Medical Officer of Health, forwarding copy of model by-laws under the Health Act- 1920, relating to dwellings and buildings for human habitation. From same advising that the Health Act and Regulations were being printed in a more suitable form. —Resolved that a copy be. obtained for the office. The Sanitary Inspector reported that for the quarter ending 30th there had been three cases of 'nt’vitilc paralysis and one suspected case, and one case acute primary .pneumo i.a. 1 resident, New Zealand Counties Association, re cost of administration of County Councils and asking to be supplied with a copy of figures in detail, under the heading cost of management as supplied to the Government Statistical Department. —Decided that Clerk supply information required. Secretary, Marine Department, ro Collingwobd wharf extension and advising that in view of the report- the marine engineer considers there is a reasonable possibility that the channel will continue to improve, and he thinks it would be unwise to proceed with the extension immediately. Mrs Massey, thanking sincerely the chairman and members of the Council for their kind /message of Condolence. Maginnitv, Son and Samuel, advising that the case 're G. B. Watson was heard on 19th ultimo, and the Judge reserved his decision, and they will advise immediately it is delivered. Secretary, Nelson Paint Company, asking permission to remove portions of bank in the cuttings known as the Red Cutting and the White Cutting on Parapara road. Resolved that permission be granted subject to the work being done to the approval of the Engineer. Mr G. L. Chittenden, applying for exemption from hawkers’ license. —No action taken.

Mr M. J. Doyle, applying for renewal of slaughterhouse license.—Resolved that Council recommend that the renewal be granted. Dr. A. L. Caselberg, applying fer permission to run a with across road to his house.—Granted.

The Maminolite Calciment- (N.Z.) Ltd. applying for permission to widen the road in front of the Company’s works at Ferntown and to ei'ect a Shiite across the road.—Granted.

Mr A. C. Nalder, re overflow of Nalder’s Creek and asking Council to givh him fall over one of the creeks up Lammas’s by-road, and complaining of » culvert turning water on to his properly and asking for pretnission to take filling from Wood’s Cutting to gravel a roadway to his property.—Decided that the Engineer report On the matters complained of to next /meeting, and that no action be taken in regard to the removal of .gravel.

Mr T. Walker, giving notice that Unless water is removed promptly from his property he will take action, and also that gravel washed through his boundary fence must be removed. —'Decided that a. deputation of the Council visit the site.

Mr W .Redfe'rn, notifying that owing to accident he had been idle since 13th June, but will be fit to resume work on Monday. Also of owners of dogs not complying with the Registration Act. — Resolved that the Dog Registration Act he enforced.

Mrs M. Wallace, asking for four days’ work with team to be done on Wallace’s by-road, and a bridge put in at end of the road. —No action taken. Prime Minister, circular letter re memorial to the late Prime Minister.—The chairman reported that lie called two meetings, one in Rockville and One in Collingwood, but only cue or two turned up. —Resolved that each councillor be furnished with a list and arrange for canvassing in their respective ridings. Interviews: .Messrs J. Grant and P. G. Hawkins waited on tho Council in regard to the licensing of motor vehicles, stating that they did not think it fair if Ford lorries were not included in the tax.—The chairman stated that they were not sure on the matter, but enquiries would be made. Striking General Rate: Moved by Cr. Richards, seconded by Cr. Davis, that a separate rate be struck for the Hosp;tal Board rate. Moved by the Chairman, seconded by Cr. blowers, that a general rate of 2hi in the £he struck.—Carried. For: Tho Chairman, Crs. Flower, Grant, and Watson. Against : Crs. Richards Davis and Lammas. Moved by Cr. Richards, seconded by Cr. Richards, that 5 per cent, discount he allowed on all general rates for year 1925-26 paid before the expiration of .30 days from due date.—Carried, Cr. Flowers Voted against. Interview: Mr J ,W. Riley waited on the Council, asking if they would do about 4 or 5 chains of gravelling at Island 'Creek The following tenders we're received: Plumbago Creek Bridge contract, A. Haines £l97.—Resolved that the tender be accepted. Winston’s Creek Bridge contract : A. -Haines £236, G.

General : It was decided that a few loads of gravel be put on the main street; that the Egnineoi- report on the road from Aurora Hall to corner of Lower Kaituna road, also on gravelling between the Aorore Bridge and llall; that tenders be called for painting the office, to close on 18th instant ; that the pot boles be filled in between the Post Office and Wallace’s hy-road ; that tenders be called for delivering 150 yards of metal on Pakawau Bush road; that it be left with the Engineer to get work done at Island Creek; that the Engineer enquire into the matter of Ford lorries in regard to heavy traffic licenses: that the Marine Department be written to stating that the Council have already waited two years in regard to the wharf and there is no improvement, ami’ asking permission to go on with the work of erecting an extension; that a special meeting of the Council be held on 18th July, and next general meeting on Ist August ; and that each councillor see what he can do in his own riding in regard to- guarantors for subsidy .for medical practitioner for next three years.: ENGINEER’S REPORT Collingwood Riding: The contractor has made a start with metalling the (read between/ Tasman Street and Fisher's Creek ; lie proposes putting on extra Rockville Riding: 1 have been unable teams at an 'eiu-Jy.'date. , to procure a suitable team for filling in pot holes on the main road. Bainham Riding: Sawdust Creek ridge was completed early las! month.

The contractor has made a slari with Mahler's ( reek Bridge. With Cr. Lammas an inspect ion was made of Hie over-flow at the top of Wood’s (/'reck cutting. <hi the outlet side of Mahler s Creek Bridge the drain cut along the fence line is too small, and either the drain should he widened or the old channel should he properly cleaned out, and tiic creek should be cioarvu (he whole length of (lie fiat land. Tho creek should also be cleaned and straightened cm the intake side through Mr Mulder's section, 'ihe creek at present overflows about 6 chains hack from the read, and spreads over the low parts of the section. finally running back to the road at tho top of Wood's Cutting. An inspection was also made of Silverstrram Creek. This creek is now very wide in places and there is no definite channel. At times small quantities of timbei come down and lodge in the channel, and deviates the water, thus making a new course. The situation would he greatly improved if settlers concerned were to remove such, timber to the sides of the creek. This would assist in protecting the land, and help to keep the channel more defined. A good ford is available to give access to section 15 a few chains above the old ford.

Parapara Riding: The contractor is making gr.r:d pn:gr</»R \illi Skiltoii’s Creek Bridge, and a start has been made with \ alley Creek Bridge. A small slip Was responsible for holding up traffic for a short period. I had it cleared off as early as possible. Mr S. Flowers has completed his metalling contract.

.Pakawau Riding: Fair progress is now being made with Pakawau Road contract, and good progress is being made with Pakawau \\ esthaven read contract. Owing to no teams being available I was unable to do any grad ing. Some patching has been done on Pakawau main road.

Puponga Riding: A timber bridge 25 feet span has been erected over Billy King Clock. This work was done by a number of Puponga settlers. No less than 22 men were engaged on the work, and the whole work was completed in 12 hours, excepting the hacking in piers and wings.
