UNIVERSITY COMMISSION

(United Press Association.)

DUNEDIN, This Day

The University Commission sat this morning. Mr Morrell, -Vice-Chancellor of the University Council, said the University Council stressed the necessity of the provision of further funds for the W.E.A.. Regarding part-time students, thev, no doubt, lost some of the chief benefits of the University, but he doubted the desirability of excluding industrious class students who, mainly for financial reasons, could not otherwise attend. He did not think, even nonmatriculated students, should be denied this permission. He preferred to trust, however, to the growing feeling in favour of full-time study for all. The attitude of the Otago Council in regard to the proposed special schools elsewhere had been dictated by knowledge of the position and the real necessities, not by any jealousy, Provincial or otherwise. In the case of medicine and dentistry, these would not be needed for a long time. For the second school in Otagoj the Council favoured the representation of organised professions and agricultural interests on the University Senate, but opposed similar tepresentation on local councils. the present constitution of the Senate was satisfactory. While all recognised that separation' must ultimately come, the Council strongly opposed separation now. It was not tiie case that the constitution of t'lie University made the modern system of examination Sir degrees impossible. The real difficulty was the small number of professors and lecturers in the faculties. At Timaru yesterday, the chairman fell and injured an arm, necessitating X-rav examination this morning.
