STRAY DOGS IN NELSON

A NUISANCE TO THE PUBLIC The milliner in which dogs are permitted to roam the city streets in Nelson is a cause of frequent complaint, and it is doubtful il this sort of thing would be allowed to continue in any other town the size of Nelson without. an endeavour being Hindu to abate the nuisance. Several times the ■subject litis been brought up at the (Jitv Council meetings; and on the last occasion Cr. \Y. C. Harley was given an assurance that, steps would he tiilcen to prevent the animals from be eomitlU a danger and a nuisance .alike to pedestrian:-, motorists and shopkeepers. '1 ne Hardy and Trafalgar-etreet inter-

jection is a favourite haunt of the 'strays,' - and this morning there were ten ;it the same time and lit the same place making a general nuisance of themwlves. Home had collars' on and others had not. There were all varieties'and breeds—from the pure bred to just ■plain doe. ’ Occasionally they would adjourn to the centre of the road and calmlv continue their playful antics in spite of the toot-toot of motor horns and tiie subdued curses of the drivers. The animals have unbounded faith in the good-nature —or perhaps skill —of motor lists ; but sooner or later some of the canines will be missing and their usual haunts? will know them no more.

When at school years ago wo were wont to write in a large round hand in our copy books "file dog is a faithful animal. Ho be is, and most, of us at one time or another have had them for our own and learnt to have a great affection for them. 'There is t:o wish to deprive anyone from possessing a dog; but when they roam the streets at all hours oi the day and make themselves a general nuisance, it is time something was done to keep a proper cheek on their liberties.

About GOO dogs are registered in Nelson City ; and it is fairly safe to assume that a fair number of others have so far escaped the tax. The population of Nolfion and suburbs is in the vicinity of 11,000, so it will be seen that there is a dog for less than every 20 inhabitants !
