IMMIGRANTS FOR NEW ZEALAND
A CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHEME

Commenting on the proposals to bring out 400 immigrants yearly to New Zealand under the auspices of the Church of England, Archbishop Averill at a meetf.ng of the C.E.M.S. raid the English authorities were prepared to contribute towards the establishment of the scheme hero. They hoped to send 200 to the North Island and 200 to the South Island each year. They appeared specially keen on sending children to tho Dominion. Some people, said the Archbishop, particularly in farming districts, would Ik- glad to gel young people, but would simple make slaves of them. Difficulties presented themselves and he felt rather staggered at- the thought that the Church should undertake t-o introduce such numbers at the present tune. He would, however, bring the matter before the standing committee of the General Synod, at its meeting about tiiree weeks hence.
