EARTHQUAKES

43 SHOCKS AT KAIKOURA

ON THURSDAY NIGHT

(United Press Association.)

BLENHEIM, This Day. Round about Kaikoura and in the vicinity of the Clarence River bridge residents had an uneasy night on Thursday during a series of earthquake shocks, which were more severe there than in the Blenheim district. It is said that 43 shocks were counted cm Thursday night,'the worst at 11.30. The shakes were felt at also throughout yesterday and two shocks last night. Reports from Clarence stato fhat chimneys are down in all directions.

It is the opinion of residents that thedisturbance centred in the ocean off the coast a mile south of the Clarence.

A crack opened along the coast road and the land on the seaward side of the crack appears to have subsided. Telephones around about the Clarence bridge were thrown out of order.
