MOTOR REGULATIONS
CRITICISM BY CARRIERS’ FEDERATION

WELLINGTON, This Day. A , deputation from the Master Carriers’ Federation interviewed Hon. J. G. Coates regarding the draft motor regulations. Interrupting ono speaker Mr Coates said the Act .was not designed to affect the railways but to relieve the burden on the settlers'.
The speaker criticised the draft regulations m several details, urging that the fees under the present classification were unfair to lorry owners excessive, and in many cases prohibitive. He expressed alarm at tlio prospect of local bodies fixing their own fees. There should bo licenses covering each island. Mr Coates suggested that representatives, of the Federation should confer with tlio officers of the Department. It was never intended that comity councils should have separate systems of bvlaws and fees or that city councils should have separate licensing authority.: Tlio Act showed that it was intended to design large areas. The Department wanted them t-o be as large as possible. Tlio conference proposal was agreed to.
