INSPECTION OF EXPORT FRUIT
RUMOURED ALTERATION OF PRESENT METHOD STRONG OPPOSITION BY GROWERS Fears were expressed at- the meeting of fruitgrowers hold yesterday that the Department, proposed this year to revert to the inspection of fruit for export at the wharves instead of at the sheds as was clone last season. The tone of the meeting was strongly against the change, it. being plainly indicated that, the present method was working satisfactorily and that the proposed alteration would he a retrograde step. It was pointed out that lucre was lack of sliN} accommodation at the wharves, and that m the past some of the fruit had received pretty rough handling. It was suggested that representations! should be made to Mr Campbell, Director of Horticulture, to reconsider the matter and give inspection at the sheds. It. was urged that meetings be held throughout the district to protest against any change in the present method.
Air Afauoy wanted to know why the change was" brought, forward almost at the last minute. Just as they were on tiie verge of export they had this proposal thrust ujion them. Air Gilbert- moved, seconded by Mr Nottage, that tiie Department he urged upon to have the same method of inspection as last year, as it had worked x cry satisfactorily. After some further discussion, the motion was withdrawn -and tiie following substituted : “That the Department be. thanked for the satisfactory working of export last, season, and tiie hope expressed that tiie same method will be carried out this ygar, Tiie motion as amended was carried unanimously* '
