SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING The monthly meeting of the Alotueka School Committee was held in the schoolroom on Tuesday evening. Present : Messrs G. W. Boundy (chairman), R. Tredrea, C. B. Morris (secretary), I). Goodall, Ik V. Knapp, L. Dcsaunais, 11. B. McGlashen and H. Hart. Accounts amounting to £44/0/1 were passed for payment. Correspondence was received from : Education Department, forwarding Inspector’s report on Whaknrewa school. Report received. v Mr F. G. Gibbs, expressing regret at being unable to arrange to give a lecture at the Motueka school in connection with the proposed fortnightly lecture evenings. Professor T. 11. Easterfkdd, accepting invitation to give a lantern lecture “The Cnwthron Institute and its work” on Thursday, August 21. Dr. L. Cockayne, regretting being unable, owing to pressure of work, to give a leeturee at present. Mr David Miller, Government entomologist, accepting invitation to lecture at Motueka school.

Tiie secretary stated that in addition to Professor Easterficld and Mr David Miller, the following would also give lectures: Messrs G- W. Boundy. O. A. Banner, P. V. Knapp, Hugs Scott, and C .B. Morris.

The chairman remarked that lie thought lectures every fortnight was too frequent, and suggested that they be held monthly. It was pointed out that the object of the sub-committee in holding the'lectures every fort night was to work them all in during the winter months.

Mr Knapp said that if after the first two lectures the fortnightly arrangement was found unworkable, then the chairman’s suggestion could be adopted. Resolved (Messrs Knapp and Tredrea) that the action of, the sub-committee be endorsed for the time being. The chairman asked how the subcommittee proposed meeting the expenses which would be incurred in connection with the lectures. The secretary said there would be a charge of 1/admission, therefore they would be selisupporting. He thought the lectures slioujd. be advertised in tliQ, Motueka ■Star awl Evening Mail, and moved accordingly. Seconded by Mr Goodall. Mr Banner stated that- the High School social evenings would take place only at the end of each term, (ho next to take place in December. The expenses in connection with these gatherings would be well covered with the Department’s extra grant to high schools. Resolved (the secretary and chairman) that an account of 15/-, together with Air Hart’s account for the last social evening, be passed for payment. Mr Banner reported that a sum of £ls/11/6 was taken at- the dental .clinic picture evening on duly 30. One or two small accounts had to he paid out of this amount, but the balance when divided on a 50-50 basis,. would give the school approximately £7. Mr Banner slated that Mr Saunders was agreeable to assist at a future date in a similar manner.. Resolved (the chairman and Air Knapp)' that the thanks of the committee be tendered iMr Saunders for his generosity.' TJio secretary reported that he had received no reply from the Horticultural Society with reference to a, meeting in -connection with an exhibition of school work at the spring show. Resolved (the chairman and Mr Tredrea! that a sub-committec, consisting of Alossrs Morris, Banner and Hart, go into the matter and report at the next meeting. The secretary drew the committee’s attention to the fact that the Education Board’s letter requesting details of improvements had not been attended to. Resolved (the chairman and Air Hart) that the matter be deferred, pending a. conference of the works committee and the secretary. Resolved (Messrs Tredrea and AlcGlasben) that the requirements of the caretaker be left to the works committee t to attend to. j

Moved (Messrs Knapp and McGlashen) that the Education Board be asked if any action lias been taken with reference to fencing of properties adjoining tiie school ground on the eastern side. Report of headmaster (Air 0. A. Banner) for period ending Bth August:— Primary: July 18th, roll 235, average 214, 91 per cent; July 25th, 235, 221.5, 94; August 1, 235, 224.7; 95.6; August Bth, 236, 216.7, 91.8. Secondary department: July 18th, roll 63, 92.5 per cent ; July 25th, 62, 95.4; August 1, 62, 99; August 8, 61, 91.9. Vacation: The school will close on Friday, 22nd inst. for the term vacation and re-open on Tuesday, 9th September. Since last meeting a visit was paid to the side school by several members of the committee.

Tlie first social evening in connection with our secondary department was held on Thursday last and proved a great success.

Tho term examinations are now being conducted and the progress cards will be sent to parents next week. A number of school boys from 'Jakiika and Collingwood districts will be entertained during the next weekend, and we hope to make a return visit i-ext month.

The dental clinic has been closed down till the Ist September, owing to the illness of -Miss Pinligy.
