A telegram from Memphis, 'Tennessee, .states that an epidemic of anthva x is sweeping Arkansas, Tennessee, and Mississippi, and lias caused fhc deaths of 20 persons and an excess of 10,000 head of live stock. Local State and Federal officers are mobilising all means available to check the scourge. An inter-Sstate anthrax conlerence has been called to devisemethods to combat the plague and centralise demands upon Washington for emergency relief appropriations. Local authorities are faced with further difficulties because negroes refuse to bury dead animals lest they themselevs contract the disease.
Special ordinances have been passed requiring dead animals to ho 'burned, together with waggons in which they arc moved.
Meanwhile all persons capable of administering anti-toxin to animals have been pressed into service. The authorities state that the disease is spread, from carcases by flies, dogs, and vultures.
