IRON DUKE SEA SCOUTS

BIG EFFORT FOR SHED PUR,CHASE FUND

Some eighty people assembled at the new Sea Scout quarters last evening to talk over the project to wipe off the cash portion of the purchase price for the shed paid by the Trust Board to the old Rowing Club trustees. Included in this number were a full representation of the executive of the ladies’ auxiliary of the Nelson Scout Association, including the President (Dr. W. D. Stoney Johnston) and the chairwoman (Mrs Moncrieff). The Sea Scouts Committee have constituted a strong committee under the leadership oi Mrs Thomas Johnson.

Mr Albert Johnson, chairman of the Sea Scout Committee, occupied the chair, and in his opening remarks extended a welcome to the large gathering. Mr W. H. Savage, District Scout Secretary, had been asked by the bazaar committee to act as organiser, and he asked him to outline the proposal to hold a bazaar.

Mr Savage referred to the sure foundation on which Sea Scouting was expanding in Nelson by the keenness of the Sea Scout Committee. He went on to explain that the object of the bazaar was to repay the guarantors, through whose assistance the Scouts had been able to acquire the Rowing Club sheds. He enlisted the sympathy of all present to forward the object. It was resolvejl that the bazaar be held in the Scouts Headquarters, Bridge Street, in October next; to be concluded with a ball in the Rowing Club shed.

A combined meeting of the lady stallholders and the ladies’ auxiliary was then held, at -which arrangements for the function wore fully discussed. -The proposal of Mrs (Col.) Thoms that all lady workers in the bazaar adopt a characteristic nautical costume was adopted. The members of the main committee include Messrs T. Johnson, A. Hutson and S. Slinn.

Before the meeting concluded the chairman remarked on the good work done that evening, and lie closed a most enthusiastic meeting by thanking all present for their attendance. A large number of gifts were handed in for the use of the committee for present needs and for the stalls.
