'To <he ErMtr<- i Sir, —Having been badly worsted in bis combat with Mr Cibbs. Mr Smith now wants to engage in a fight with me. 1 do not propose to be drawn into a controversy especially as Mr Gibbs has already dealt with the figures which Mr Smith* considers such a “tragedy.” In reply to his enquiry as to whether I have been asleep or not, 1 should like to sav that 1 have at least- been far too wide awake to make such incorrect statements as Mr Smith has been proved guilty of.—l am etc. fa E.
