WASHED INTO SLUICE BOXES
MINER SERIOUSLY INJURED

Arthur Clifton, a well known miner at Ritnu and former Westland County Chairman, while engaged in sluicing operations on a claim, was overwhelmed by a fall of earth from a face and washed into the sluice boxes to the end of the tail race, a distance of 700 yards. When assistance arrived Mr ‘Clifton was found to be seriously injured. Medical assistance was obtained and it was found necessary to carry the sufferer miles on a stretcher over rough tailings before an ambulance could be utilised for his removal to the Westland Hospital. Mr Clifton’s condition is serious, though ho is showing a remarkable recovery.
